Broken Bone Healing Process –
You’re walking out the patio door on a warm summer’s night to throw some food on the grill and you slip, fall and break your toe! The doctor says you need surgery and that you should be grateful you didn’t break an arm or a leg! Now what?
When a bone is broken, the body’s natural healing process kicks in. Blood vessels in the area of the break are damaged, which causes blood to leak into the surrounding tissue and give you that scary discoloration that tells you something is seriously wrong. This is called a hematoma, or a collection of blood, at the site of the break.
Healing Broken Bones
Remember, there is no medical advice being given here this is just for basic education understanding of what happens when a bone breaks! Our bodies have an amazing way of helping us recover from injuries and over the next few days, cells called osteoblasts begin to arrive at the site of the break. These cells produce collagen, which is a protein that forms the framework for new bone tissue.
Over time, the collagen matrix hardens and becomes mineralized, forming a structure called callus. A “callus” is actually a type of soft bone that replaces the blood clot. Isn’t the human body amazing?
If you did not see a doctor your body would do whatever it could to try to repair itself. But, wisely, you seek medical care immediately to assist your body in repairing that broken bone to optimal functionality and appearance.
Immobilizing Broken Bones
Depending on the type of break, you may or may not need to immobilize the area to prevent further injury and/or hold it in place to support the body’s natural healing process (doctor’s call on that). As the callus continues to form, new blood vessels grow into the area, bringing oxygen and nutrients to support the healing process. The callus gradually becomes stronger and more organized, and eventually it is replaced by new bone tissue.
Here are a few things you can you do to help expedite the healing process for a broken bone. Of course, the VERY first thing is to seek medical care quickly. Then…
- Get plenty of rest: Rest is important for allowing the body to focus on healing the broken bone. Your patience will pay off. Re-injuring a partially healed break makes things much more complicated!
- Keep the broken bone immobilized: Immobilizing the broken bone helps to prevent further damage and allows the bone to heal in the proper alignment.
- Elevate the affected area: Elevating the affected area can help reduce swelling and improve circulation to the site of the break.
- Apply ice: Applying ice to the area of the break can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Your physician will have specific ideas on this depending on the location of your injury.
- Take pain medications as prescribed: Pain medications and other medications may be prescribed to help manage pain and other symptoms. Follow the doctor’s orders but also pay attention to your body’s response. Some pain medications can cause constipation or other issues. The theory is that you need to stay “ahead of the pain.” That’s why it’s important to write down and stay on a schedule of pain relievers. And of course find ways to minimize medications when possible. PEMF has been proven to help reduce inflammation and expedite bone healing. - Follow a healthy diet: When you’re flat on your back, feeling like crap and unable to move a whole lot it’s easy to throw away any discipline you might have for eating healthy. But now is the time to really eat the healthiest diet you can! Eating a healthy diet that includes plenty of calcium and other nutrients can help support the healing process.
- Practice patience: It’s important to remember that everyone’s healing process is different, and the amount of time it takes for a broken bone to heal will vary depending on factors such as the location and severity of the break, your age, health condition, etc.
- Physical therapy: Your physician may recommend physical therapy. If so, DO IT! Your body is not meant to lay around. You’ll recover faster, mentally and physically with the right activities to keep your blood flowing, your brain glowing and your healing going!
